Duty Free Shops Expansion at HNL
Bringing Ho'okipa to Life
Ho'okipa, the word for Hawaiian hospitality or to welcome all guests with warmth and respect, was the design inspiration behind the DFS expansion at Honolulu International Airport. KYA worked alongside DFS and the State Department of Transportation to create an aesthetic refresh that would compliment the functionality of the airport's concourses.
Natural materials in a neutral pallet were used, coupled with a variety of textures and patterns, to form an elegant and contemporary conception. The simple yet rich features are intended to comfort and relax passengers as they explore all DFS merchandise venues.

Storefront facades were designed to complement the original architecture and wood art mural in the ticket lobby created by Vladimir Ossipoff, a well-known local architect. His work serves as a timeless backdrop for signage and lighting designs that showcase the sparkle of the shops' interiors and accentuate the Ho'okipa ambiance.
