Japan Airlines Sakura Lounge

Calming, captivating lounge where east meets West and delights…

The mission was to convert an existing bar and restaurant facility into a first class lounge for Japan Airlines passengers. The airline was increasing the number of flights to Honolulu and the original VIP lounge, located on the first floor at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, was inadequate and could not accommodate the increase in passengers. The intent was to provide a “corporate” design to be used as a prototype for JAL Lounges at international airports throughout the world.

Features of the lounge included a wireless computer system, an extensive self-service beverage counter, relaxation and massage rooms, exclusive private rooms, restrooms designed per Japanese standards and a kids’ play area. A key design element was the use of cherry wood. The custom finished cherry wood, used throughout the lounge, was representative of the cherry blossom or “Sakura” flower.
